Merced, California, "Gateway to Yosemite," is just off Highway 99 in the San Joaquin Valley. It is often a stopping off place for people traveling to Yosemite as it is at the unction with Highway 140, the all-weather highway that enters Yosemite through the Merced River Canyon into the Valley, which is 70 miles east by road from Merced. Merced is home to the newest University of California campus, UC Merced.
