Hotel Description
Location. Located on a bluff overlooking Arena Cove on the Mendocino coast, the Coast Guard House Historic Inn is one mile from the sleepy hamlet of Point Arena, Calif. This quaint village features the restored Art Deco Arena Cinema, shops and a few casual restaurants. The harbor of Arena Cove is home to a public pier and a commercial fishing fleet. Fishing from the pier just below the inn requires no license. The cove also offers sport fishing, abalone diving, tide pooling and surfing. Schooner Gulf Beach is three miles south of the village. The Point Arena Lighthouse & Museum is four miles away.
Features. The Coast Guard House Historic Inn is a Cape Cod style home built in 1901 by the U.S. Life-Saving Service. The inn is furnished in the tradition of the Arts and Crafts period, featuring works of local artists and mementos of the inn's maritime history. Complimentary full breakfasts are served each morning. Fax and photocopy services, and complimentary wireless Internet access are available. An ocean-view front porch, garden and living room with a fireplace are offered for guests' use. The inn is an excellent vantage point for observing California grey whales, whose migratory path leads them just offshore.

Guestrooms. The inn offers four guestrooms with private bathrooms in the main house and two cottages. All rooms offer views of the ocean, Arena Cove or the canyon. Select rooms feature wood-burning fireplaces and deep soaking tubs. The Cypress Cottage offers a jetted tub for two nestled next to a gas fireplace. The living/dining area features a wood-burning stove. A redwood galley offers a refrigerator, microwave oven and coffeemaker. Upstairs, the sleeping quarters boasts an ocean-view captain's bed overlooking Arena Cove and a library room.

Expert Tip. In 1901, what is now the Coast Guard House Historic Inn was officially named the U.S. Coast Guard Life-Saving Station Number 314 at Arena Cove. The men who manned the lifeboats that were stored and maintained here launched many daring sea rescues along the rocky shores of the north coast.
