The Civic Center and Little Tokoyo are just northeast of downtown LA. The Financial District is at the west end of downtown, just east of the 110 freeway. The Convention Center and Staples Center (basketball and other sports) are located southwest of downtown, at 12th and Figueroa, and just west of the 110 freeway.

The area just east of the 110 freeway has lower-cost hotels and motels, but is located in an older, poor neighborhood, dramatically different from downtown Los Angeles.
