Mandan, North Dakota is located on the banks of the Missouri River in the center of the state, across from Bismarck. The town name is derived from mantani "People of the bank," which describes the people who originally lived along the Missouri River. The original village was abandonded after a smallpox epidemic in 1781. Nearly a century later modern Mandan was founded after a railroad bridge was built across the Missouri River.
