Ghirardelli Square, San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf This busy tourist area on the waterfront features the ferry to Alcatraz Island, Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square (world-famous chocolate), and numerous tempting entertainment and dining options. The history of the wharf goes back to the gold rush when Chinese immigrants fished off shore for the hordes of shrimp, oysters and salmon. Italian fishermen followed. They set up family stands along the beach selling crab and other seafood delicacies. You can still find fishermen and their boats along the piers in the early morning hours, but the area has changed into a place full of restaurants, shopping and family attractions. Fisherman's Wharf is famous for clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl.

North Beach Originally a home to Italian immigrant fishermen, it's still known for its many fine Italian restaurants and delis. Also known as "Little Italy of the West" Church of Saints Peter and Paul is at Washington Square.

Telegraph Hill Just east of North Beach is Telegraph Hill, with Coit Memorial Tower. The tower was built in during the the 1930s as a memorial to San Francisco's fire fighters. It has great views of the city on top and has several depression-era murals.
