The southern and western sides of San Francisco are mostly quiet residential communities. Still compact, they are usually more sedate than downtown. Golden Gate Park is at the western side, with its museums and gardens. The Presideo, once a military reservation, is in the northwest corner of the city. The Presideo is being preserved as a park and has some interesting museums. The west side of San Francisco is often cold and blustery as it receives weather directly from the Pacific, unprotected by hills.
