Civic Center, Tenderloin, California Hotels

Tenderloin is generally the "seedier" side of San Francisco with its strip joints, bars, head shops, and homeless people. It's also known as "The Theatre District." The Tenderloin is an interesting place, but, because of violent crimes committed here, avoid it alone or at night--it's not safe. If you're staying here ask at the Hotel desk what areas are safer. The Tenderloin district is generally the area north of Market St. and the Civic Center, east of Van Ness Ave. but west of Mason St. and south of O'Farrell St.

Safer areas are usually near the busy thoroughfares of Market Street and Van Ness Avenue (US 101), and east of Van Ness or south of Market.

Little Saigon, a Vietnamese community, has developed in this area, due to the low rents available in the Tenderloin.
