Newark, California at the southeast corner of San Francisco Bay, is the one holdout town that refused to be combined into sprawling Fremont (to the east), because it didn't want to become the industrial zone of Fremont. Instead it chose high-tech and lured in high-tech companies such as Solectron and HP. Newark is physically connected to Silicon Valley by the Dumbarton Bridge, which spans the bay to Palo Alto.
